Production of Spirulina

SEVAS SPIRULINA PROJECT

(Demonstration of Spirulina small scale industry)

SPIRULINA TO VILLAGES

(SEVAS SPIRULINA PROJECT DETAILS)

Interest in Spirulina sp. as a potential source of food, it was started late before 1640 in Mexico. Spirulina has the highest protein (65%) of any natural food. In spite of immense uses of the species, awareness about this nutrient supplement in developing countries is still insufficient, people should comprehend the real significance of the species as an excellent food supplement, disease resistant product and as an animal feed (Low grade Spirulina).

Academicians and researchers worldwide have started various projects on Spirulina, however Indian villagers are not conscious of or benefited by this wonderful species. Not only this species is useful as a nutrient supplement, but also be a great economic investment for them. People in developing countries like Thailand and Myanmar produce tons of Spirulina powder and export them to the developed countries.

This project aspires on the installation of small-scale industries of Spirulina production and as well as processing and marketing of the species. This would generate awareness about the species and would definitely provide self-employment opportunities for the deprived villagers.

Objective

The project aims on establishing small-scale industries in different states in India with assistance of the academic institutions and the NGOs. The maintenance cost for the production of species for one year will be compensated by the project. People have to stabilize within a year and should be able to generate some income using the project. The approach of the project is in such a way that, for the first six months Spirulina will be provided free of cost, during this period the benefits of consuming this food supplement will be realized by the people. After six months a profitless minimal amount will be charged and towards the final two months of the project, the charges will be increased to generate modest profit. This profit amount will be utilized to install further similar small scale industries. As shortly the number of industries increases resulting in improved production, exporting of the processed product to the other countries will be considered.

Target people: This project primarily aims on women and children population in rural areas below poverty line. Special training will be provided to these women regarding Spirulina production. The Spirulina drink will be offered free of cost to various categories of community like school children, workers and elderly people to reduce mal nutrition and to create income during project duration.

The project would assist in two different ways:

(1) To generate awareness about the species thereby reducing malnutrition at rural.

(2) To provide global market possibilities of Spirulina species to improve job opportunities and economic status of the villagers involved in the project.

Stage 1: Procurement of mother culture and standardization in laboratory (The mother culture is taken from Oferr organization which is producing Spirulina for the past seven year and reported no side effect and the same species are used in Sevas Spirulina project).

Stage 2: Collection of Interested individuals and NGOs to install small scale industries

SEVAS Collected 15 Entrepreneurs, who are interested in performing Spirulina project throughout India in six different states.

Joining in this project (as Entrepreneur) is free of cost but with donation as minimum of  Rs. 7000/- to the society is mandatory so that, it will be helpful for the society to provide technical guidance and to meet other expenses like experts visit, travelling expenses etc... in erecting Spirulina small scale industry.
